The European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) published the latest edition of its Spotlight on Markets – January & February 2026 newsletter, which includes updates to its Digital Strategy 2026–2028 and its updated Data Strategy 2023–2028.

The newsletter contains a section titled “ESMA’s Digital and Data strategies support supervision of EU financial markets,” describing developments related to supervisory technology and data infrastructure.

MiCA supervisory infrastructure

Among the key new actions listed under the updated Data Strategy is the implementation of the next phases of the MiCA joint supervisory tool for crypto-market monitoring.

The updated Data Strategy lists new actions including expanding the ESMA Data Platform and streamlining supervisory reporting, alongside MiCA crypto-market monitoring tooling.

Digital strategy 2026–2028

According to the newsletter, ESMA has adopted a Digital Strategy for 2026–2028. The strategy sets out priorities related to technology-enabled supervision, digital resilience, and operational effectiveness within the authority.

The newsletter describes the Digital Strategy as a roadmap for innovation, efficiency and resilience, with objectives including enhancing supervisory coordination across Member States and strengthening ESMA’s digital capabilities.

Data strategy and ESAP

The updated Data Strategy 2023–2028 includes finalising the development of the European Single Access Point (ESAP), a centralised platform designed to facilitate access to financial and regulatory disclosures within the European Union.

The newsletter states that supervisory reporting improvements and enhanced data processing capabilities remain priorities under the updated framework.

Regulatory context

The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) establishes a harmonised regulatory framework for crypto-asset service providers, asset-referenced tokens, and e-money tokens in the European Union.

The January–February 2026 newsletter outlines ongoing implementation actions related to ESMA’s digital and data strategies in support of its supervisory mandate under EU financial legislation.
